When writing a paper in mla format, do you put one or two spaces after the periods between sentences?

I always use 2 spaces, only because that's the way I was originally taught in middle school before learning about the "formats" of papers. Teachers/professors won't mark off for the different of 1-2 spaces after ends of sentences, they look at the actual content of the paper. Typically noticing the difference from 1-2 spaces isn't possible to notice, as long as it's consistent throughout.
