How closed can a flue be on a gas fireplace?

They make flu less gas fireplaces so I would think it would be safe to close. Just for giggles, make sure you have a working co2 detector. The only way I can see it not being safe is if you burnt something in it or your gas was turned on and it didn't ignite but it should have safety's like a thermocouple with a Pilot.
